Issue Statement:

Tax practitioners should not have to reveal their Social Security Number (SSN) and birthday when they call into the IRS; especially when they already have a Power of Attorney (POA) Form 2848 on the CAF system. However, to authenticate an individual, the IRS asks these questions each time. A tax practitioner “PIN” could be issued once a POA is established on the MF.

Goal Statement:

Eliminate the request for a tax practitioner’s Personal Identifiable Information (PII) and, instead, ask for the preparer’s tax identification number (PTIN) and / or Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) to verify the caller they are speaking with and cross reference to the Power of Attorney (POA) information to CFINK.
