Add phone numbers to online accounts

Project Statement:

Taxpayers should be given the option to add phone numbers to their online accounts profile and maybe provide an option to receive SMS/text.

Goal Statement:

By adding phone numbers to online accounts, the taxpayers would be provided another option of communication since taxpayers will have the ability to receive messages to their phones to confirm any updates to their accounts.

RECOMMENDATION TEXT:

Allow taxpayers to add and update their phone numbers under their Online accounts.

IRS Action: Recommended

Response explanation For the Individual Online Account (IOLA), collection and management of phone numbers will be introduced when we implement SMS notifications capability. Implementing phone number collection earlier will only introduce taxpayer confusion
around the need/use of their phone numbers. Phone number collection/management for multi-factor authentication is already in place by ID.me. SMS notifications capability has been prioritized for IOLA. We do not have a target date at this time.
