As the 2024 Taxpayer Advocacy Panel (TAP) year draws to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on the achievements and progress made during the past 12 months. It’s also an important opportunity for TAP, its members, and the program staff to express their heartfelt gratitude to those who helped make this year a success.
TAP members would like to extend their sincere thanks to this year’s National Chair, Debra “Debbie” Kurita, and National Vice Chair Michelle Brookens. Their unwavering commitment and leadership have been instrumental in guiding TAP through another great year.
The collective efforts and enthusiasm of TAP members have significantly contributed to advancing the program. Their passion for improving the IRS and their willingness to go above and beyond in their roles will undoubtedly leave a lasting positive impact on countless taxpayers across the nation.
“I want to sincerely thank all of our graduating TAP members for their incredible dedication and hard work this year,” said National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins. “It has been an incredible year for TAP and the contributions of all the members are appreciated. They have not only helped taxpayers across the country but have also set a strong foundation for continued progress in the years ahead. Their commitment to improving the taxpayer experience, especially through initiatives like the online services project, has made a significant impact that will help shape how taxpayers interact with the IRS, making it easier for them to meet their obligations. I am deeply grateful for the time, energy, and innovative ideas the members continue to bring to the table. Congratulations on a job well done and thank you for all that you’ve accomplished.”
Throughout the year, TAP committees have worked hard at researching taxpayer issues and sending project referrals to the IRS. These referrals included a wide range of recommendations aimed at refining IRS products, forms, and notices, and enhancing the taxpayer experience.
Notable areas for improvement explored by TAP committees included:
- Form 2210, Underpayment of Estimated Taxes by Individuals, Estates and Trusts;
- CP14 notices, which inform taxpayers they owe money on unpaid taxes;
- Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit; and
- The Foreign Direct Bank Deposit for International Taxpayers.
The diligence and insights provided by TAP members have played a vital role in identifying areas for improvement in the tax system. Their work ensures that taxpayer concerns and needs are at the forefront of IRS operations.
It’s also important to recognize the significant contributions of retiring TAP members. These selfless professionals have dedicated themselves to improving the IRS during their three-year term. As they prepare to move to the next chapter, their hard work and commitment should not go unnoticed. These professionals have devoted hundreds of hours of their personal time to support TAP’s mission: improving our tax system for the American people. Their efforts have not only benefited taxpayers but have also set a standard for future members to aspire to. They’ll continue to make meaningful contributions to their communities in other ways, but hopefully will consider rejoining TAP when they can.
Looking ahead to the 2025 TAP year returning members are filled with anticipation to take on new challenges and opportunities to work for solutions that will improve the tax system for all. Congratulations to the newly elected TAP National Chair Michelle Brookens, and Mitchell Gerstein, who will serve as the TAP National Vice Chair. Members are enthusiastic about the leadership and vision the pair will bring to the panel. They’re also eager to collaborate with returning colleagues while welcoming new members into the TAP family.
