TAP 05-013 AMT Education

TAP 05-013

AMT Education

Statement of Issue:

At present, millions of middle income taxpayers likely are unaware of the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) or the possibility that they may have to pay AMT within the next few years.

Proposal:

TAP recommended that the IRS educate taxpayers about the AMT, just as the IRS has made an effort to educate the public about the Earned Income Tax Credit, Taxpayer Advocate Service, and Efiling. For example, the IRS could distribute printed material explaining the AMT and conduct a public awareness campaign through media releases. TAP attached two prototype models as examples of what the average taxpayer might find helpful.
